VYSHYVANKA – THE GENETIC CODE OF THE NATION

Vyshyvanka is our Ukrainian genetic code with encrypted amulets, symbols and signs. Vyshyvanka is a reflection of strength and indomitability. Vyshyvanka is the visual language of our people, its creativity and culture, a symbol of beauty and national identity.

Ukrainians traditionally celebrate Vyshyvanka Day on the third Thursday of May. The staff of Sumy National Agrarian University gathers together every year to celebrate such an important event, especially during a full-scale invasion.

The department for educational work with students of SNAU, student assets and members of the admission committee held an Ethno-quest for applicants, high school students of Sumy educational institutions. Schoolchildren went through 5 stations with tasks that helped them learn more about the history, varieties and meaning of embroidered ornaments. Practical psychologist L. MYKHAILENKO shared the training “Choosing a Profession: Secrets of Success”, and D. DEREVYANCHENKO, student rector of SNAU, taught young people the art of coffee.

  1. BABYCH, SMM-manager of SNAU Promotion Office, was involved in the organization and holding of the celebration.

After the start of the full-scale invasion, Vyshyvanka Day took on a special meaning. Ukrainians are forced to defend their national authenticity and fight for it, giving their lives.

Historical reference: the holiday was introduced in 2006 by L. Voronyuk, who at that time was a student of the history faculty of Chernivtsi National University. The girl suggested to her classmates to choose a day and come to the lecture in national dress. This idea was supported not only by students, but also by instructors. Over the years, the tradition has become popular throughout Ukraine. The date always falls on the third Thursday in May.
