“Main Aspects and Approaches in Potato Growing” is the topic of a scientific and practical seminar on the development of potato growing, which was held for students of the Faculty of Agrotechnologies and Natural Resource Management on September 22, 2023.
The event began with a welcome speech of Oleksandr MASLAK, Director of the Department of Agro-Industrial Development of the Sumy Regional State Administration. The representative of the authorities paid attention to the main aspects of the development of potato farming in the region, noted the main problems in cultivation.
On behalf of the administration of the Sumy National Agrarian University, Yurii DANKO, Vice-Rector for Research and International Activities, was present at the scientific and practical seminar and spoke about the experience of growing potatoes in our institution:
“At our university, this is a traditional and basic agricultural culture. SNAU is the only institution of higher education in Ukraine that deals with potato breeding. No other institution conducts such research. Moreover, after the start of the full-scale invasion, our university became the only state institution on the Left Bank that is engaged in seed production and potato breeding “.
Olha BAKUMENKO, Dean of the Faculty of Agrotechnologies and Natural Resource Management, announced to the audience the plan of lectures as part of the scientific and practical seminar. The following issues were on the agenda:
An overview of SNAU breeding varieties and new potato varieties promising for cultivation in the North-Eastern region of Ukraine.
Demonstration of the results of selection work, research on the technology of growing potatoes.
Implementation of seed material.
During the lectures, students had the opportunity to see the samples of potatoes of various types: «Kniahynia», «Pikasso», «Nemo», etc. They were evaluated and compared according to several criteria: ripeness group, marketability, number of tubers per bush, productivity.
The scientific and practical seminar took place in a friendly atmosphere. We are sure that such events are important; they increase students’ interest to the problem, motivate them to become participants of various forums and meetings.
