At the end of last week, more than two dozen new saplings were added to the collection of the Sumy NAU Arboretum. The Department of Landscape Gardening and Forestry, together with the student body, the dean’s office and the administration of Sumy NAU, planted 5 varieties of panicle hydrangea and three varieties of bush lapwort on the university campus. In total, 27 unique saplings were added to the Garden of Knowledge, which will decorate the territory of the Agrarian Centre with bright colours.
‘The Garden of Knowledge was laid out on 19 October 2019 on the site of a former hangar as a centre of oriental landscape design on the university’s territory. The plants planted today are typical representatives of Japanese and Chinese gardens, and are also among the most popular types of modern decoration in European cities. In addition, the Arboretum serves as a natural laboratory where students and scientists can study the diversity of tree and shrub plants. It contains unique species of plants, both local flora and exotic representatives from other regions of the world.
Established only 17 years ago, the Arboretum of the SNAU already has more than 150 cultivars of deciduous and coniferous trees and shrubs.
Undoubtedly, the Arboretum still plays an important role in raising environmental awareness. It is an excellent venue for excursions, scientific conferences, seminars and educational events for students, schoolchildren and anyone interested in nature. Its territory contributes to the development of ecological thinking and the formation of an appropriate attitude towards the environment.
In addition, the territory of Sumy NAU is a favourite holiday destination not only for university students and staff, but also for city residents. Its picturesque alleys, a variety of colours and aromas, and a calm atmosphere attract more and more people every year.
