For Sumy National Agrarian University, participation in socially important initiatives is of particular importance, as they combine scientific, educational, and humanitarian missions. For three years in a row, the university has been successfully running “the Cat” volunteer project, which aims to help stray animals in Sumy region.
The initiative was launched in 2022 with the support of the international organization “FOUR PAWS” Ukraine. SNAU became one of five institutions in Ukraine to launch a project aimed at sterilizing and vaccinating stray cats against rabies. All animals are registered after the surgeries. The partners provide the project with medicines, supplies, and equipment, as well as engage specialists to effectively implement the program. Important support is also provided by the Animal Care Center, the Sumy Society for the Protection of Animals, and the university administration.
The activity is coordinated by Olesia Kisterna, Associate Professor of the Department of Internal Medicine, Pharmacy and Biochemistry, an experienced veterinarian who has been treating animals for over 25 years. Thanks to her professionalism and the involvement of students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, young people have the opportunity to gain unique practical experience, mastering skills in the field of veterinary medicine and volunteering.
The project has modern logistics: a surgical table, sterilizer, electric coagulator, refrigeration equipment, and even an autonomous charging station, which allows for surgeries under any conditions. A pet hotel is available for temporary stay of animals.
Despite the fact that one doctor carries the main load, she is actively assisted by student volunteers. They participate in preparing animals for surgeries, take care of them, maintain equipment and communicate with the public. For many of them, this is a valuable opportunity to gain practical competencies that will be useful in their future professional activities.
On October 28, “the Cat” Project will celebrate its third anniversary. During this time, it has become an example of an effective combination of science, practice, and volunteerism that brings real benefits to the community.
Appointments for charitable operations are made on working days from 9:00 to 17:00 by phone: +38 (099) 715-77-69.
Sumy National Agrarian University is sincerely proud of its community of teachers, students and partners who have united for a noble cause – caring for the environment and rescuing stray animals.
