Sumy National Agrarian University continues its systematic efforts to create a safe and modern educational environment. An important step in this direction was the establishment of a shelter at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, which combines safety, educational, and research functions.
As of today, the university operates 8 certified shelters with a total capacity of approximately 1,900 people. The shelters are equipped with about 30 classrooms, ensuring the continuity of the educational process even under martial law.
Throughout 2025, the university implemented a series of measures aimed primarily at creating safe living and learning conditions for students. All existing shelters and bomb shelters were renovated, and additional classrooms were put into operation within the protective structures.
Special attention has been given to the development of inclusive infrastructure. Tactile signs featuring Braille and raised elements have been installed in the academic buildings for people with visual impairments. They are placed at an accessible height and serve a navigational purpose, facilitating independent and safe movement within the buildings.
In addition, the faculty’s premises have been equipped with tactile tiles featuring contrasting yellow markings, creating a clear navigation system for people with special educational needs. A continuous accessible route combines a ramp, an elevator, and the lecture halls of the Sumy Business School, forming a seamless, inclusive path of movement.
These solutions align with the principles of universal design, accessibility, and equal access to education, enhance safety, and create a comfortable, people-centered educational environment.
In 2026, the university launched a large-scale project to construct a shelter with radiation-protective properties at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The project aims to provide conditions for conducting scientific research in the veterinary and agricultural fields, developing practical skills, and improving the quality of educational and scientific services in the “Veterinary Medicine” program.
The total project cost is 30.46 million UAH, and the area is 1,200 square meters. The project is being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
To date, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has already allocated 12.8 million hryvnias, with an additional 1.3 million hryvnias provided from the local budget. Thanks to this funding, nine facilities have been equipped, including classrooms and laboratories, a medical office and a first-aid room, as well as a space for student self-government.
The creation of such a shelter is an important step in establishing a comprehensive university safety system that combines physical protection, modern educational infrastructure, and comfortable conditions for learning and research.
