SNAU Among Ukraine’s Leaders in Jean Monnet Projects: University Received Funding for Three Initiatives

Sumy National Agrarian University has been awarded three Jean Monnet projects under the 2026 Erasmus+call. In terms of the number of successful projects, SNAU ranked second among higher education institutions in Ukraine.

This year, a total of 40 Jean Monnet projects involving Ukrainian universities were selected for funding. At the international level, the call also demonstrated strong interest in European studies: in 2026, funding was awarded to 327 new Jean Monnet projects worldwide.

For SNAU this means more than simply adding three international projects to its portfolio. The University gains new opportunities to update educational programs, develop courses on EU policies and standards, strengthen the competencies of students and professionals, and enhance its role in the European educational space. In particular, Jean Monnet Modules involve teaching European-related topics over a three-year period and may include summer schools and other educational formats.

The SNAU projects cover three different areas of development:

  • EU-LANDLINK — EU Policy LAND Governance LINKed to Agroforestry Restoration. Project Coordinator: PhD in Agricultural Sciences, Head of the Research Laboratory of Agroforestry and Agro-Landscape Restoration, Associate Professor at the Department of Ecology and Botany Roman Yaroshchuk. The project focuses on European approaches to land resource management, agroforestry, and the restoration of degraded agricultural land. Over the course of 36 months, SNAU plans to implement the course “Sustainable Agroforestry: EU Best Practices,” hold winter and summer schools, offer certified courses, and organize policy labs — formats that will enable knowledge of European approaches to be translated into practical solutions.
  • INTEREPO — EU Integrated Reporting: Linking Finance, Sustainability and Governance. Project Coordinator: Doctor of Economics, Professor at the Department of Accounting and Taxation Oleksandr Nazarenko. The second project brings together finance, sustainable development, and corporate governance. It includes the modernization of a master’s-level course in accounting and financial reporting, the development of a new course on ESRS/CSRD, as well as a bilingual online certification course. This will give students an opportunity to work with approaches and requirements that are already shaping the European business environment.
  • EUFOR — EU Green Deal Forestry for Ukraine: EU Forest Strategy, Nature Restoration, and Post-War Land Recovery. Project Coordinator: PhD in Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor at the Professor M. D. Honcharov, Department of Breeding and Seed Production; Head of the Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies Department Svitlana Yaroshchuk. The third project focuses on EU forest policy, nature restoration, and the post-war recovery of damaged territories. Planned outcomes include two new bachelor’s-level courses devoted to the EU Forest Strategy and the restoration of damaged territories, professional training programs, and a summer school.

All three projects share one common idea: European integration should take place not only at the level of strategies and documents but also directly in university classrooms, laboratories and professional training.

This is precisely the purpose of the Jean Monnet action within the Erasmus+ programme: it supports teaching, learning, and research related to the European Union and European integration. For higher education institutions, Jean Monnet Modules are a dedicated instrument for developing such educational areas.

For SNAU, it is particularly important that the topics of the three new projects are directly connected with the University’s profile: land and agroforestry, finance and sustainable development, forestry and land restoration. This means that European practices will not remain theoretical — they will be integrated into the education and training of future professionals.

This is another step towards becoming a university that not only follows European developments but also incorporates them into its own education, research, and professional environment.
