Published: October 13, 2025

On 9 October, a meeting was held in Kyiv between the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, and Deputy Minister Mykola Trofimenko with the heads of higher education institutions in the city of Sumy. Sumy National Agrarian University was represented at the event by Rector Ihor Kovalenko, who joined the discussion on current issues facing universities in the frontline regions

During the meeting, they discussed the challenges, opportunities and prospects for the development of educational institutions operating in close proximity to the state border. The rector of SNAU shared the university’s experience, which, despite the martial law, maintains the stability of the educational process, conducts scientific research and develops international cooperation.

It’s not easy for us, but we are doing everything possible to maintain the quality of education and science. We conduct research, train specialists, and develop international cooperation,’ said SNAU Rector Ihor Kovalenko.

The high level of the university’s activities is confirmed by the results of national certification, according to which Sumy National Agrarian University received a ‘A’ rating in its scientific fields.

During the meeting, the rectors of frontline higher education institutions emphasised a number of issues
that are critically important for regions living in the risk zone:

  • improving approaches to financing border universities;
  • increasing the level of remuneration for employees;
  • supporting the restoration of educational infrastructure;
  • ensuring the safety of the educational environment and eliminating the consequences of armed aggression.

A constructive dialogue took place on each of these issues, and mutual understanding was reached with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

As the leading frontline university in the Sumy region, SNAU continues to defend the interests of the region’s educational community at the national level, demonstrating that education is stronger than the challenges of war.
