Fishing in Sumy region: SNAU outlines ways to modernise the industry

On 6 October 2025, a meeting was held at Sumy National Agrarian University to discuss the state and development of the fishing industry in Sumy Region. The event provided an important platform for discussing the current state of aquaculture, ways to develop it, and the formation of a regional strategy to support the fishing industry in the context of European integration processes.

The mission of the university is not only to teach, but also to unite. SNAU is always happy to join and unite, because quality education today is never possible without decent practice and partnership. Thanks for the trust and cooperation,’ said SNAU Rector Ihor KOVALENKO, welcoming the participants of the event.

The meeting was attended by Ukrainian MP Maksym HUZENKO, Deputy Chairman of the Sumy Regional Council Mykyta BANIA, Director of the Department of Agricultural Development of the Sumy Regional State Administration Oleksandr MASLAK, Head of the State Agency for the Development of Land Reclamation, Fisheries and Food Programmes in Sumy Region Oleksandr NEPOCHATOV, Head of the Health Department of Sumy Regional State Administration Olha VEDMIDERA, as well as representatives of the fisheries sector. Sumy National Agrarian University sincerely thanks all participants for their fruitful cooperation and high trust. Holding such a meeting at SNAU is a recognition of the university’s role as a platform for the development of science, education and agricultural production in the region by representatives of local authorities, business and the scientific community.

The meeting addressed issues related to the state and prospects of fish farming in Sumy Region, topical aspects of fishing and aquaculture in the context of Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations, and the development of the regional market of fresh fish.

Particular attention was paid to discussing problematic issues in the industry and finding solutions to improve its efficiency.

During the event, a presentation of the Sumy NAU aquaculture laboratory was introduced by the dean of
the Faculty of Biology and Technology, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Viktoria VECHORKA.

The event was summed up by Ukrainian MP Maksym HUZENKO, who emphasised the importance of further cooperation between the government, science and business in shaping a sustainable.
