Sumy National Agrarian University continues to implement initiatives aimed at developing urban greening and creating an ecologically balanced environment in Sumy. As part of the next stage of this work, staff from the Department of Horticulture and Forestry, together with university students, took part in practical activities to renovate the city’s green areas.
A total of 120 trees were planted, including 90 sharp-leaved maples and 30 common horse chestnuts. The greening covered Svobody Avenue and the area near Lake Chekha, which are important public and recreational locations in the city.
All planting material was grown at the SNAU landscape design laboratory, which ensures the quality control of planting material and its adaptability to urban conditions. Both scientific and teaching staff and students were involved in the work, for whom participation in such projects is an important part of their practical training.
As noted by Yevhen Sonora, head of the SNAU landscape design laboratory, the use of its own planting material is a fundamental component of the university’s approach:
“The plants we plant in urban spaces are grown directly in the SNAU landscape design laboratory. This allows us to ensure their quality and adaptability, while also involving students in the entire cycle of work — from cultivation to planting and care“, he notes.
For SNAU, greening urban spaces is not a one-off event, but part of the ongoing work that the university has been carrying out since 2016. During this time, a number of initiatives have been implemented aimed at combining the educational process, scientific developments, and the university’s practical participation in community life.
The implementation of urban greening projects is carried out with the support of the university administration. The department staff expresses its sincere gratitude to the rector of Sumy National Agrarian University, Ihor Kovalenko, for his support and promotion of environmental initiatives that allow the university to work systematically to improve the urban environment.
Sumy National Agrarian University will continue to implement greening and environmental development projects aimed at creating a comfortable, safe, and environmentally balanced urban space.
