On January 30, 2026, Sumy National Agrarian University held an international scientific and practical conference entitled “The Green Mission of Universities and Sustainable Community Development.” The event was held online and brought together scientists, teachers, students, and community representatives from Ukraine and European countries. During the conference, SNAU, in cooperation with international projects and educational and scientific institutions, developed common approaches, solutions, and a vision of the role of universities in ensuring sustainable development.
The conference was organized within the framework of cooperation between Sumy National Agrarian University, Sumy Business School, international projects UNICOM, Erasmus+, Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, and the Ukrainian State University named after Mykhailo Drahomanov.
The chosen topic is extremely relevant in the context of global climate change, environmental challenges, and Ukraine’s post-war recovery. Universities play a key role in shaping environmental values, developing sustainable thinking competencies, and finding scientifically sound solutions for communities that are in line with European policies and the principles of the EU Green Deal.
The conference featured presentations on indicators of the European Sustainable Development Goals, social dimensions of the green transition, the green recovery of Ukraine, climate adaptation of communities, food security, the role of forest belts in biodiversity conservation, ecological transformation of territories, as well as practical experience of cooperation between universities and communities.
Following the conference, SNAU reaffirmed its strategic mission as a center of knowledge, expertise, and partnership in the field of sustainable development. The event was an important step in strengthening cooperation between universities and communities and forming a shared vision of a green future at the national and international levels.
