The Royal Agricultural University of Great Britain expressed support for the SNAU

Published: July 22, 2025

A reliable international partner of Sumy National Agrarian University, the Royal Agricultural University of Great Britain (RAU), has expressed its sincere support for the university community of SNAU, which suffered from the attack of Russian unmanned aerial vehicles on July 14, 2025.

SNAU and RAU have a long-standing and effective cooperation. In particular, a joint Twinning double degree program in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security is being implemented, as well as an international research project of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) aimed at studying the impact of war on arable land pollution in Ukraine.

The partner university has repeatedly demonstrated solidarity with the Ukrainian academic community by supporting both academics and students of the SNAU.

As a result of the attack, the university’s administrative and academic buildings sustained significant damage. At least three buildings were partially destroyed, dozens of windows were smashed, and laboratory equipment and infrastructure were damaged. The final amount of material damage is currently being established.

A particularly disturbing consequence of the attack was the injury of six people – academic and technical staff and one student. Fortunately, the lives of the victims are not in danger.

In an official letter addressed to the Rector of SNAU, Professor Ihor KOVALENKO, and the Vice-Rector for Research and International Affairs, Professor Yurii DANKO, the Rector of the Royal Agricultural University, Professor Peter McCaffery, together with the Vice-Rector for Research, Professor Mark Horton, expressed their support:
Please pass on our sincere condolences to all your colleagues… You can count on us and our support – we stand behind you completely and proudly raise the Ukrainian flag today. We remain with you as always – united against a cruel enemy.

Sumy National Agrarian University expresses its deep gratitude to the Royal Agricultural University of Great Britain and all international partners, colleagues and friends for their solidarity, concern and support.

Today we feel especially acutely the value of every word and every action aimed at preserving and developing the university.
