The History Museum of Sumy National Agrarian University (SNAU) was opened on May 15, 2007, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the university’s founding.
The first head of the museum was Halyna Petrivna Vasylenko, who managed it from its establishment until December 2014. Since 2015, the museum has been headed by Mykola Hryhorovych Tsyhanok.
The museum introduces visitors to the history of the university, from its founding as the Sumy Branch of the Kharkiv Agricultural Institute to its attainment of national university status. It features historical documents, decrees of the President of Ukraine, resolutions of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, and archival materials reflecting the university’s development.
Among the museum exhibits are:
The museum also features an exhibition dedicated to internationalist soldiers — SNAU students — and a display covering the events of the summer of 2004, when students and faculty protested against the merger of three universities. This movement became known as the “Tent Revolution,” the “Student Revolution,” and the “Revolution on the Grass,” and is considered a precursor to the Orange Revolution.
Among the museum’s rarities are the “Peasant Agricultural Encyclopedia” of 1927, donated by the director of the Museum of Education, as well as an icon, vases, and photographs presented by the rector of the Church of Saint Valentina — the only church in Ukraine built on the territory of a university.
An ethnographic corner operates within the premises of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, showcasing agricultural tools and household items from the 16th–19th centuries: a plow, a scythe with a rake, an ox yoke, wooden and metal wheels, a spinning wheel, a washboard, and other artifacts. All exhibits were collected and donated to the museum by SNAU Associate Professor Hryhorii Makarovych Oliinyk.
Additionally, an ethnic culture corner of Ukrainians has been established at the Department of State and Legal Disciplines and Ukrainian Studies of the Faculty of Law.
The SNAU History Museum serves not only as an exhibition space but also as a venue for alumni meetings, student mentoring hours, and excursions for university guests. Visitor impressions are recorded in the “Guest Book of Feedback and Wishes.”
On February 22, 2012, by order of the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine, the SNAU History Museum was awarded the title of “Exemplary Museum.”
