Institutional Background and Development of International Partnership

The partnership between Sumy National Agrarian University (SNAU) and the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf (Hochschule Weihenstephan-Triesdorf, HSWT, Germany) dates back to 1995. The initial phase of cooperation focused on providing SNAU students with opportunities to undertake industrial placements at agricultural enterprises in Germany.

Back in 1996, three SNAU students who demonstrated a high level of professional training during their internship became the first representatives of Ukraine to be invited to study at HSWT under the postgraduate programme in Agricultural Management, which was headed at the time by Professor Herbert Ströbel.

In December 2001, Sumy National Agrarian University became an official partner of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) project ‘Export of German-language Training Courses,’ which was confirmed by the signing of a cooperation agreement. The main goal of this partnership was to establish sustainable institutional mechanisms for international educational cooperation, in particular:

  • the launch of an international Master’s degree programme Master of Business Administration in Agriculture (MBA);
  • the establishment of a unified international network of parallel MBA programmes in agricultural management, ensuring mutual recognition of learning outcomes in accordance with the Bologna Process;
  • the promotion of academic mobility of students and academic staff, primarily within the framework of the Master’s programme in Agricultural Management;
  • the implementation of double degree schemes and the awarding of internationally recognised diplomas;
  • the development of long-term and multidimensional cooperation in education and research;
  • the involvement of other agricultural universities and colleges in the partnership network.

Within the framework of this agreement, an international Master’s programme in Administrative Management was officially launched at SNAU in June 2002. The programme is delivered in Ukrainian and German, and since 2015 also in English.

On 29 November 2019, Sumy National Agrarian University became a member of an international consortium comprising 24 universities from 12 countries, following the signing of a joint Memorandum of Intent. Furthermore, in 2024, an updated and extended agreement on the joint implementation of a double degree programme with the German partner university was concluded. This agreement significantly strengthened SNAU’s integration into the European and global higher education area. The renewed cooperation framework provides for:

  • the awarding of double degrees to graduates of SNAU and HSWT;
  • the further development of the international network of parallel MBA programmes;
  • the promotion of inclusive and equitable access to quality education, as well as the creation of opportunities for lifelong learning.

Over the period of cooperation, 235 students have participated in a practical training semester, 101 students have completed part of their studies at the German partner university, and 28 students and early-career academic staff have successfully completed an assistantship programme. Since the inception of the international Master’s programme at SNAU, the total number of enrolled students has exceeded 900.

Between 2002 and 2020, more than 20 international training courses on pedagogical excellence and professional competences were organised at SNAU. These activities involved over 90 participants from 10 higher education institutions in Ukraine, Germany, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Georgia. In addition, guest lectures, seminars, and webinars delivered by international experts are traditionally organised on an annual basis for students of the Master’s programme.

With the onset of full-scale aggression, cooperation with the German partner became more intensive. In the context of military challenges, SNAU and HSWT initiated a virtual academic mobility programme to support Ukrainian students, which was later joined by higher education students from African and post-Soviet countries. The programme included courses taught in English and Ukrainian by lecturers from HSWT, SNAU and the Virtual University of Bavaria, with a special focus on foreign language learning. As part of the project, 66 SNAU students became DAAD scholarship holders in 2022 and were enrolled at a German university as participants in a virtual semester; 27 students took part in 2023 and 18 in 2024.

Graduates of this study programme successfully realise their professional potential in leadership and management positions in international companies, representative offices of German, Austrian and Swiss enterprises, in the field of domestic agribusiness, as well as in scientific and educational institutions in Ukraine and leading European countries.

The Master’s programme was accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine on 22 June 2006 and by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in April 2009. The programme successfully passed further accreditation in November 2016 and was reaccredited in May 2023 by the European quality assurance agency ACQUIN. International accreditation serves to confirm the full compliance of the programme’s content and educational quality with European higher education standards.
