American philanthropist Howard Buffett visited Sumy National Agrarian University to get acquainted with the achievements in the restoration and preservation of Ukrainian soils. The patron, who is a practicing farmer in the USA, chose SNAU after finding the results of its unique scientific research in the open access. The visit of the international guest was an important step for the development of the academic and practical potential of the Sumy region.
During his stay at the university, Howard Buffett held a substantive meeting with soil researchers, where he got acquainted in detail with the current achievements of scientists in studying the impact of military operations on the ecology and agrosphere. The joint dialogue emphasized the global significance of the work of Sumy scientists and laid a solid foundation for future international initiatives.
The reason for such a deep interest of the philanthropist is that the problems of the agrosphere and ecology are close to him on a personal and practical level. Despite his status as the son of one of the world’s most famous investors, Howard Buffett is a professional farmer who independently cultivates thousands of acres of land in the United States, personally manages agricultural machinery and actively implements the latest energy-saving technologies, including zero-tillage. His foundation manages research farms around the world, studying soil health and food security. That is why he highly appreciated the transparency and scientific authority of SNAU, which already has significant international experience.
The Howard Buffett Charitable Foundation is currently one of the largest private donors to Ukraine, providing multi-million humanitarian support in various areas: from financing advanced prosthetic centers and restoring damaged hospitals to purchasing machines for demining fields and armored vehicles for evacuating people from front-line zones.
Support for farmers occupies a special place in his activities. His foundation created a large-scale program “Harvest of Victory”, which provides Ukrainian farmers with modern John Deere equipment free of charge for work in the affected regions. Sumy National Agrarian University also actively participated in the implementation of this program, helping to ensure effective interaction with producers and supporting the resilience of the agricultural sector in extremely difficult conditions.
The main result of the visit and meeting with researchers was the formation of clear plans for the future regarding long-term scientific and practical partnership in the field of soil conservation. The main vector of joint work was determined to be detailed monitoring and study of the content of heavy metals in lands damaged by hostilities.
Shelling and bombing lead to significant contamination of black soils with toxic elements, which threatens food security. Joint work between scientists of SNAU and experts of the Buffett Foundation can be aimed at land reclamation, creation of digital maps of pollution and development of biotechnology to restore field fertility.
Such a visit proves that Ukrainian agricultural science is of enormous importance for the future revival of the state.
