Investing in the Future of the Environment as SNAU Scientists Restore the Region’s Forest Ecosystems

Published: April 14, 2026

Sumy National Agrarian University continues to implement a model of practice-oriented education, where the training of specialists is integrated into solving real environmental challenges. With the beginning of the forest regeneration season, applicants for the specialties “Forestry” and “Landscape and Park Management” began large-scale work on creating new forest areas in the Sumy region.

This year’s initiative is implemented in a strategic partnership with the branch “Northern Forest Office” of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine”. Together with expert teachers, applicants went through the full cycle of ecosystem restoration: from soil analysis and selection of planting material to the implementation of modern technologies for planting and caring for young forests.

“Participation in such events for our applicants is not just practice, but the formation of a professional worldview. We train specialists who have relevant competencies and are ready for the challenges of the modern forestry industry,” says Andriy Melnyk, Head of the Department of Horticulture and Forestry.

Dean of the Faculty of Agrotechnology and Environmental Management Serhiy Horbas emphasizes the deeper meaning of such activities:

“This is a combination of professional skills with environmental responsibility. Teamwork on the restoration of natural resources lays the foundation for a conscious attitude towards the ecological future of our country.”

SNAU’s active involvement in forest restoration is part of the university’s sustainable development strategy. We not only train competitive scientists, but also make a real contribution to the preservation of Ukraine’s natural capital, combining educational innovations with practical environmental restoration.
