On August 29, Ukraine honors the memory of the defenders—both men and women—who died fighting for our country’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
On this day, Sumy National Agrarian University joined the nationwide “Sunflower of Remembrance” campaign, organized jointly with the Department of National-Patriotic Education and Youth Policy of the Sumy Regional State Administration.
The sunflower became the symbol of the campaign—a reminder of those who gave their lives for Ukraine. In the days leading up to the event, students, faculty, and university representatives handcrafted sunflowers of remembrance, which they later distributed to residents of Sumy, spreading awareness about this important day and urging people not to forget the price Ukraine pays for its freedom.
Maria Minchenko, head of the Department of National-Patriotic Education and Youth Policy of the Sumy Regional State Administration, and Olena Kireieva, deputy head of the Sumy Regional State Administration and chair of the Coordination Council, joined in honoring their memory.
The memory of the fallen defenders lives on not only on official commemorative dates. It lives on in everyday conversations, symbols, stories, and spaces that help the younger generation understand the true value of independence. That is why thematic exhibits were set up at SNAU for Remembrance Day.
The Ginkgo Café and the Department of Student Affairs set up memorial tables, while the SNAU Scientific Library prepared an informational exhibit featuring thematic publications that recount the history and unique experience of Ukrainian resistance.
Today, as we do every day, we remember each and every one who gave their most precious gift so that Ukraine could be free.
Let us remember the price of our independence. Let us honor those who paid the ultimate price for it.
