A public discussion was held in the greenhouse of the National Botanical Garden named after M.M. Hryshko, dedicated to the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war on the soils of Ukraine. The event was organized with the participation of the international initiative Living the War and the French Institute in Ukraine.
Ukrainian and international experts joined the discussion, including scientists of the SNAU, senior lecturer of the Department of Agrotechnology and Soil Science Oksana Datsko, and associate professor of the Department of Plant Protection named after A.K. Mishnev Olha Bakumenko, who presented the results of research on mapping soil contamination in different regions of Ukraine.
The presentation demonstrated a systematic approach to analyzing the effects of military operations on soil cover, including the impact of missile strikes, explosions, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The research is aimed at generalizing and visualizing the extent of damage and forming a scientific basis for further restoration of land resources.
The participants in the discussion focused on the complex environmental consequences of war that go beyond mine contamination, including changes in soil fertility, the state of their microbiota, and long-term risks for the agricultural sector.
Special attention was paid to the development of international scientific cooperation. In particular, the partnership of SNAU with the French scientific center INRAE within the framework of the NADIYA program, which is implemented with the support of the French Institute in Ukraine, was noted. The program provides for internships for Ukrainian researchers in leading scientific institutions in France, and representatives of the university have already participated in it twice.
The participation of SNAU scientists in international scientific dialogue testifies to the high level of their expertise, contributes to the integration of the university into the global scientific space, and strengthens the role of the scientific community in forming decisions on overcoming the environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine.
