TO PRESERVE CULTURAL HERITAGE AND TAKE CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT: HOW SNAU SCIENTISTS PLANTED OVER 120 TREES IN THE TOURIST PEARL OF SUMY REGION

SNAU scientists R.Yaroshchuk, S. Yaroshchuk and O. Melnyk were able to create a new, interesting tourist route and involve senior pupils in the environmental initiative

A unique Lishchynskii estate built in the late nineteenth century, was designed by architect V. H. Zaleskii. The unicity of the park for Sumy region is that there are not typical trees for the region – plane trees, ginkgo, Amur corktree, butternut (Juglans cinerea L.) and black walnut (Juglans nigra L.), silver spruce, Weymouth pine, California, Canadian and Virgin spruce, Schwedler and swamp maple.

Every year so-called “green” or ecological tourism becomes more and more popular, because it is quite budget and available even in a pandemic. On the estate territory there is a monument of garden and park art of national importance – a park with a total area of about 56 hectares, which presents more than 100 species of plants, some of which are over 250 years old. This object could become a real tourist magnet. However, there is a problem – low information literacy among the population, and the park needs to be supplemented with plants.

The idea of scientists has found support among donor organizations. The project got funding from the European Union and the Department of Youth and Sports of the Sumy Regional State Administration.

The project is designed for 5 months and the planting of trees is its first stage. More than 120 ornamental trees and shrubs have appeared here. Among them are ginkgo, Norway maple, common catalpa, Judas tree, Vanhoutte spiraea.

The Deputy Governor of Sumy Region V. Medvid, the Head of the Department of Youth and Sports of Regional Administration Ye. Pokhodnia, the Head of the Yunakivka Territorial Community O. Sima, the Head of the Local Department of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports Ya. Bilokur also planted the trees.

The next step in the project will be the installation of benches, litter boxes and information stands that will tell tourists more about the history and features of this location, which is unique not only for Sumy region but for Ukraine.
