From the history of the holiday:
The need for a national holiday arose after the Russian occupation of Crimea and the start of hostilities in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The date of October 14 was not chosen by chance: this day marks the Christian holiday of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God, who was the patroness of the Cossacks, and in 1999 the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks was established. Undoubtedly, on this day, the ancient military past of Ukraine is combined with the heroic present.
Therefore, in order to remember the heroic deeds of our ancestors and celebrate the military successes of modern fighters, on October 14, 2014, the Day of Defenders of Ukraine was celebrated for the first time.
