Let’s start the week in a patriotic way! Celebrate one of the most important days in the history of our country!
19 February – the Coat of Arms of Ukraine Day
The Coat of Arms of Ukraine has a rich history and symbolic meaning. Its modern look was established on 19 February 1992, but the symbols included in the coat of arms have ancient roots. For example, the trident, one of the main elements of the Coat of Arms, was used in ancient times as a symbol of sovereignty and power. There are more than forty versions explaining the origin of the trident. One of the most widespread claims that this ancient sign is a mystical symbol of the three-dimensional world. There is a religious version that claims that the trident is a stylised image of a dove, a symbol of the Holy Spirit. It is also suggested that the trident may represent a falcon diving for prey. Another version claims that the trident encodes the word “volia”. Some deciphered the initial letters of names in it: Volodymyr, Olha, Yaroslav.
20 February – Day of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes
This day is dedicated to honouring the memory of those who died during the Revolution of Dignity in 2013-2014 on the Independence Square in Kyiv. The Heavenly Hundred is a group of activists, students, workers and other citizens who were killed during the Maidan protests. They fought for democracy, freedom and European values. The heroes have become a symbol of sacrifice and commitment to the ideals they stood for.
21 February – International Mother Language Day
This holiday was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in November 1999 and was first celebrated in 2000. The purpose of International Mother Language Day is to highlight the importance of linguistic diversity, to support and preserve different languages, and to honour the cultural heritage they carry.
