The hackathon ‘Ukrainian Scientific Community for Soil Quality in Ukraine’ was organized and conducted by the staff of the Department of Geodesy and Land Management with the full support of the university administration and the professional team of the Law Faculty. The educational challenge is international and aims to encourage students and staff of universities in Ukraine and the EU. It aims to generate ideas and find solutions to overcome the problem of soil quality in the areas affected by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It also aims to integrate citizen science based on the use of digital tools. The hackathon was a logical continuation of the programme “Training of Experts in Soil Assessment and Restoration of Areas Affected by Hostilities ’ launched by Sumy NAU.

The Challenge took place on 13-14 November 2024 and served as a platform for uniting the student community of four Ukrainian universities: Sumy, Kharkiv and Odesa. The result of the work was the presentation by the teams of their vision of restoring the quality of soils affected by the hostilities. The teams consisted of students of different specialties: ecology, law, earth sciences, geodesy and land management, which allowed them to approach the task in a comprehensive manner, and share knowledge and experience in various fields.

The event was organized on the initiative of the Web2Learn team and is related to the DigiEduHack tasks developed within the framework of the GROMADA partnership: ‘Addressing Military Threats to Water Resources in Ukraine’ and “Ukrainian Academic Community in Legal Aspects of Citizen-Generated Data”.

We thank the organizers for their cooperation and interesting experience! We thank our defenders for the opportunity to learn!
