Future leaders in combating and adapting to climate changes have started training at Sumy National Agrarian University. Certificate courses for bachelors, masters and graduate students at Sumy NAU are held within the Erasmus + Jean Monnet Chair project “EU Climate Leadership”, which has been implemented at the university since 2020.
Masters and graduate students began their studies on February 15. Bachelors began their courses on March 1. As the project coordinator Olena Melnyk explained, at first it was planned to conduct face-to-face training exclusively for students of Sumy NAU, a kind of regional course. However, when it became clear that quarantine restrictions would not allow this, an online training started. Not only the students of Sumy universities, but also representatives of Lviv, Zhytomyr, Chernihiv and other regions were enrolled in courses.
For 4 months students will have a weekly lecture conducted by experts in the field of climate change and climate policy in Europe, as well as project consultations who are going to present their own projects aimed at strengthening the environmental security of mankind and adaptation to climate change. Leading scientists and specialists of SNAU will work with students, in particular Ihor Kovalenko, Viktoriia Skliar, Olena Melnyk, Iryna Vaskina, Maryna Sherstiuk, Yurii Skliar. Each of them will be a tutor of one group of students. They will not only provide theoretical knowledge, but also will help to prepare a project. Though the classes within the courses “Fundamentals of Environmental Safety and Climate Policy of the EU” are held remotely, they certainly do not lack interactivity! During lectures and consultations they play online games on climate protection, work with interactive whiteboards, etc.
By the end of the courses, each participant will receive a certificate with the appropriate number of hours and ECTS credits – 90 hours for bachelors, 180 hours for masters and graduate students. However, the main thing is that the course, as well as all activities within the Erasmus + Jean Monnet Chair project “EU Climate Leadership” will form a community of conscious and active leaders in the field of ecology and environmental protection.
