Within the framework of the European project ERASMUS+ AFISHE – “Development of education in the field of aquaculture and fisheries for a green deal in Armenia and Ukraine: from education to ecology” SNAU teachers completed two-week internship at the University of Porto (Portugal).
At the beginning of the first week of the internship, they visited the “SEALIFE” aquarium, where water reliefs are reproduced in different locations and relevant species of living organisms are kept. The participants were shown the complex life support system of the complex and shared the experience of organizing the maintenance of a large number of various organisms in closed water systems.
Subsequently, they inspected the equipped scientific unit of the University of Porto CIIMAR RESEARCH CENTER, which is located directly in the ocean.
The SNAU delegation also observed the selection and evaluation of samples from the fishermen of the oceanic fish market “Porto de Peska de Matosinnos” in order to identify marine organisms that are not allowed for fishing.
The next locations are the “PINHAIS@Ca., Limitada” canning factory, which produces the best sardines in the world, and the largest farm for growing valuable fish species FLATLANTIC AQUACULTURE.
The first week of work ended with an excursion to the aquarium THE LITTORIAL STATION OF AGUDA ELA, where the inhabitants of local biotopes are represented.
The second week of the internship took place according to individual plans for the participants, built according to the specifics of the disciplines that will be taught in the educational program. Each of the SNAU delegations had a personal mentor who provided theoretical advice and shared their experiences from practice in laboratories and in production.
That’s how Olena KOSHEL mastered the intricacies of the “Nutrition and Food Technology” discipline, studying the peculiarities of fish nutrition in the CIIMAR laboratory.
Maryna SHKURKO for teaching the discipline “Animal Welfare in Aquaculture and Public Aquariums” joined the practical work on studying the assessment of animal welfare in aquaculture and public aquariums, namely in the SEALIFE aquarium.
Halyna REBENKO with the discipline “Bioresources of the hydrosphere and their use” practiced in the selection of biological material from fish and its research, and also touched on the history of fishing and its modern possibilities.
Olha BORDUNOVA and Hanna PETRENKO got acquainted with the processes of industrial fish processing, procedures for determining the quality and safety of seafood for teaching the discipline “Aquaculture processing technology”.
Olha KORZH worked on the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching the discipline “Aquaculture of artificial and natural reservoirs”.
The internship ended with an introduction to the organization of educational electronic platforms and software, which are used in the educational process of the University of Porto, and a presentation of the results by the participants.
