Sumy National Agrarian University has won an international award for the implementation of the project “Training of Experts in Soil Assessment and Restoration of Territories Damaged by Military
Operations.” The Ukrainian Agrarian Guardian received the highest award for achievements in entrepreneurship and engagement in higher education, implemented jointly with The Royal Agricultural
University.
The award is given by the Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities and is a
global recognition of efforts to promote business development. It is the first award to specifically focus
on different aspects of the third mission of universities. The award aims to promote change at universities and emphasize their role in local communities and ecosystems.
As a reminder, the project is organized to help participants master the following skills:
Sampling of soils damaged as a result of hostilities;
Analyzing soil samples for contamination using modern equipment (PxRF);
recording the environmental consequences of hostilities using GIS technologies and remote
sensing;
conducting research on the effects of hostilities using aerial photographs;
processing of aerial photographs using the QGIS software;
use of ground-based hyperspectrometric measurements to assess the condition of the soil
cover;
calculating the damage caused by hostilities to agricultural land.
The SNAU team continues to work on international projects aimed at implementing important initiatives for the country’s future.
