Sumy National Agrarian University celebrated the All-Ukrainian Library Day. This holiday symbolises society’s deep respect for spiritual heritage, education, science and culture. For centuries, the library has been considered a temple of wisdom and enlightenment. It is a kind of treasure trove of human knowledge.

An interesting fact is that reading relieves stress. Researchers at the University of Sussex have experimentally proven that reading is the fastest way to relieve stress. Just 6 minutes with a book and the level of stress hormones in the body decreases by 68%. At the same time, walking and listening to music showed a 42% and 61% reduction, respectively, while playing a video game showed only a 21% reduction.

In addition, the scientific library of a modern institution of higher education is a powerful digital centre that provides access to global scientific databases and resources, electronic catalogues and repositories, which facilitates the research activities of the university community, bringing them to a new scientific level.

Not everyone has the opportunity to get behind the library shelves, but the SNAU Research Library has no boundaries! On the occasion of the holiday, a group of SNAU students travelled through the departments of our library ‘Library labyrinths: no outsiders allowed’. They visited all the book depositories and offices that they did not even suspect existed.

The library staff protects a real treasure that carries knowledge acquired over the centuries. Larysa LUTSAK, a leading librarian of the Library Service and Storage Department of Sumy National Agrarian University, was awarded the Rector’s letter of thanks for her high professionalism, significant contribution to the development of librarianship, creative approach to performing her duties and on the occasion of the All-Ukrainian Library Day.

Also, Svitlana BILOSHAPKA and Nataliia HRYTSENKO were awarded for conscientious and exemplary performance of their duties and on the occasion of the All-Ukrainian Day of Libraries. Despite the digitalisation of all processes at the university, the library still remains a place where every student or teacher feels a special desire for knowledge. A book in your hands is respectful and stylish.

In 43 BC, a huge library became a wedding gift. The Roman commander Mark Antony presented the Pergamon Library, which consisted of almost 200,000 books, to Queen Cleopatra of Egypt. What a royal gift! However, historians still argue about the veracity of this fact.
