On November 9, 2023, Sumy National Agrarian University, within the framework of cooperation with the National Ecological Centre of Ukraine (NECU), held a roundtable meeting on the topic “Damage of NRF Objects and Forests in Sumy Oblast as a Result of Russian Aggression and Possible Ways of Restoration”. The event was organized to analyse the current state of the territories and objects of the Nature Reserve Fund (NRF) and forests of the Sumy region that were damaged as a result of military operations, as well as determine possible ways to restore them.

The event was moderated by Dmytro IVANOV (NECU) and Viktoriia SKLIAR (SNAU). The roundtable brought together representatives of the National Ecological Center of Ukraine, headed by Chairman Ruslan HAVRYLIUK, and NRF institutions located in the Sumy region (Desniansko-Starohutskyi National Nature Park, Hetmánskyi National Nature Park, “Mykhailivska Tsilyna” nature reserve, “Seimskyi” regional landscape park), specialists of the Department of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of the Sumy Regional State Administration, teachers of the Department of Ecology and Botany, as well as students of the specialty “Ecology”.

Reports on the topic of the event and issues of assessment and analysis of the amount of damage caused by the war were listened to; possible options for restoring natural complexes, maintaining the percentage of protected areas in the region at the appropriate level were discussed. Conclusions and proposals of the roundtable discussion will be addressed to the central and local authorities, whose powers provide for the implementation of measures for the protection and management of forests and territories of NRF.
