SNAU GRADUATE INITIATES PROJECT THAT CAN HELP SMOKERS GET RID OF ADDICTION

Tobacco addiction is a huge problem today. Many articles have been written about the danger of smoking for people and their environment as well as about nicotine treatment. In particular, the so-called replacement therapy is widely used when a person uses medicines that contain nicotine.

“Narcologists use many methods of treatment. One of them is nicotine replacement drugs. If a person does not smoke, but uses substitutes – this is a plus,” – said narcologist Taras Zlydennyi in a comment for “Suspilne”.

The graduates of Sumy National Agrarian University and Agrointernship of SNAU started growing organic raw materials for such medicines. Research sites for growing organic tobacco are also located on the territory of university. These sites were shown to the students during the cultivation of the culture.

As a post graduate student Oleksii Nazarenko explained, no chemicals were used to grow and protect the plants. After ripening the tobacco will be sorted and sent for drying and fermentation. After that he plans to send his samples to a laboratory in Geneva (Switzerland). If the samples are certified, it will be possible to make lollipops from this raw material to overcome tobacco dependence. They can be used in substitution therapy.

However, narcologist Taras Zlydennyi notes that such drugs can be used only with a doctor’s prescription.

Production of lollipops will begin as soon as all necessary documents are received. “Now we are looking for partners: Ukrainian pharmaceutical companies that will process this raw material into a medicinal product,”- Oleksii Nazarenko summed up.
